Dinner with the PEPLUMs!

For a couple of seasons, layers and peplums have been decorating many of the truly spectacular pieces. Starting with maxi or A-line dresses, layered skirts and going further to structured jackets and asymmetrical, layers bring excitement, beauty and visual entertainment.  We have to admit that this season it’s all about the frill, even if we are referring to transparency, opulence or ultra feminine details. How to wear peplum

The peplum ranks very high in the ruffle family, which are so popular in fashion. After all those slim-fit and bodycon dresses there is finally something flattering in store for us! The peplum detail highlights your feminine curves and at the same time covers them softly. I love the Givenchy peplum jacket for this season, they are so bold, so powerful.

Givenchy – Spring – Summer 2012

It’s exciting how a detail that is usually attached to ballroom dresses and vintage jackets, becomes incorporated into wearable and desirable clothing pieces. Connoisseurs are familiar with the fact that the peplum attended other dinners over time, especially in the ’40s, when the emphasis was on the wasp waists and in the ’80s, when peplums balanced jackets with pronounced shoulders.

Peplum Style - Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen – Spring Summer 2012

This year, however, the variety of peplums is unexpected, almost every fashion house has juggled peplums in the spring-summer season 2012.  Some more conservative (Giles), others more visionary (Givenchy, Marchesa),more feminine(Vera Wang, Jason Wu ) or even the futurists such as Alexander McQueen, Zac Posen and Cushnie & Ochs. This can mean only one thing: fast-fashion brands will definitely taste this  delicacy, thus providing a wide range of options for all figures and budgets.

What kind of peplum?

Regarding color, peplums are often made of the same fabric / color like the rest of the clothing piece, however we believe that they also look good on  contrasting tops, skirts or dresses. With regards to the length of the peplum, usually short = sexy, but I’ve seen many other styles which start from the waist and have a longer fabric attached to them.

I think sexiness lies in the reinterpretation of this detail. If you like the idea, but it’s not quite your type, try something more edgy and asymmetrical that dresses down the feminine touch. For a dramatic pill try something ecletic and create a mix between classic and modern. We loved the white Vera Wang dress – the asymmetry, layers and transparency mark all these points.

How to style the peplum?

The peplum should be placed in the middle of the table, in the center of attention! Don’t out-shine it with volumetric accessories because it will ruin the balance of the entire outfit. Go for ellegant jewelry and you can even highlight your waist with a skinny belt just above the ruffle peplum.

Peplum jackets and tops go perfectly with office troursers or skinny jeans, leggings or leather pants, while skirts look their best with a tucked-in top. In more formal outfits, wear your peplum jacket all zipped or buttoned-up. Peplums also look amazing on top of those slick office pencil skirts. However, try to keep a more conservative image regarding the top as you could suffocate the entire outfit. Wear heels, they always make a difference with regards to proportions for any outfit, this time making the peplum be in the center of your hourglass silhouette.

Get ispired…!

Celebrities have not said no to peplums, and ever since last year when the new collections have hit the runways, we saw many artists and actresses taking on this style which adds a touch of drama and contributes to the outfit’s feminine allure.

The Jazz Era – Fashion in the 20s

20s Scene

20s Scene via. blogs.varsity.co.uk

The new glamour doesn’t come from the disco days of the 80s or the 90s, but instead draws its energy from the very beginnings. Get inspired from the lifestyle and the fashion from almost a century ago, from the middle of the Jazz era.

Regarding the views of the ideologies of those years The Lost Generation, was probably the best to illustrate the impact of the 20s. This group stood for a large number of artists and American writers who were living in Europe at that moment. Famous names such as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Zelda Fitzgerald or John Steinbeck took part in literary and social manifestos at that moment.

A recent image of this phenomenon can be experienced in Midnight in Paris (2011 – Woody Allen’s latest masterpiece) that shows an escape from the modern Paris into the social scene of the twenties. Also, the remake of the American masterpiece The Great Gatsby – announced for the end of this year, will have Leonardo diCaprio starring as the lead male actor.

Even if the economical boom of that time would have allowed the indulgence of new riches and escapes, the prohibition prevented alcohol consumption. The places therefore became a cover for illegal traffic and boot-legging. But it wasn’t just the gangsters who were taking advantage of the Prohibition, it was the women as well as they were empowered with freedom they never had before such as the right to vote or to dress as they pleased. This emancipation was reflected in their attitude and in the fact that smoking in public became cool and clothing was more and more revealing.

Nightlife - 20s

Nightlife – 20s

F. Scott Fitzgerald said about those times that the parties were bigger, the lifestyle was heavier, but the morality was less important.”

As fashion was concerned, art-deco details were irreplaceable for the evening looks. Luxury and opulence needed to be observer and dramatic, not only during the evenings spent at the bar or in the clubs, but also throughout the day. This is mainly because drama was big and the soundtrack of the twenties was Jazz. Jelly Rol Morton, Louis Armstrong or Duke Ellington are essential in the entertainment scene in the beginning of the beginning of the century. Additionally, James P. Johnson defines the dance steps of the decade by inventing the Charleston.

This is the background of all those embellished and glamorous outfits decorated by stones, pearls, tassels or shinny embroidery. The iconic elements of the 20s are nevertheless widely known: the flapper dress, short bobbed hair, the LBD introduced by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel are just a few of the elements which define the fashion scene of the twenties.

We owe so much to this decade and we would have never discovered minimalism if we hadn’t known what More is, in the “Less is more” motto. Thus many of the creations developed in the Twenties have pioneered a certain modern item: the sewing and complicated embroidery and floral tones (Jean Lanvin), knitted bathing suits, sport outfits and the tennis skirt (Jean Patou) or even the trousers (Paul Poiret).

In order to get a 20s look, you can try a few of the flapper interpretation, hair accessories and fascinators are also spot-on, not to mention the deux-piece outfits or the shiny art-deco details.

GET the Flapper!

You should know that the best way to achieve this look is to get into the twenties spirit. The word “flapper” designates the twenties socialyte.

Imagine the short bouclé hair, a straight low waist dress without any cleavage highlight, who loved to smoke or apply makeup in public and who showcased the rebel attitude. The French used to call this typology ‘garçonne’ due to the dramatic transformation of the silhouette compared to the previous years women were wrapped in tiny corsets.

Many of the clothes from these days did not make it through the years because of the delicate craftsmanship and the extreme beading, but there are many sources where these clothes get featured at their biggest potential. Books or movies tell the perfect story. Recently there has been quite a focus around embroidery and beading and many 2011 and 2012 collections showcase so many Twenties inspired looks.

Summer 2012 Fashion Ad Campaigns – We love

There were so many spring – summer ad campaigns for 2012, but not all of them were inspiring to us. There were just a few who were truly different and exciting across the magazine spreads. On our short-list there are of course Mulberry, Louis Vuitton or Herve Leger for the simple fact that they stand for fashion aspirational motive. And that is of course the fact that it can take you to a whole new dimension. Let’s go!

Mulberry - Spring - Summer 2012

Mulberry – Spring – Summer 2012

For example, the Mulberry ad is once again shot by Tim Walker, who managed to dazzle our minds with these awesome over-sized candy. Last season the shoot contained some vintage collages, in which the models  were trapped among foxes and other stuffed animals, so we could say that spring really brings the brand to life. The setting is out-door on Brighton Beach and the models, Frida Gustavsson and Lindsey Wixson are as fresh as you can get.

Louis Vuitton - Spring Summer 2012

Louis Vuitton – Spring Summer 2012

We were expecting the Louis Vuitton ads to be charming, because the fashion show was truly amazing with that enormous carousel and Kate Moss in the ending. The campaign highlights a retro glamorous ice-cream parlor where Daria Strokous and Kati Nescher indulge in yummy desserts probably so much craved in the fashion world 🙂 The composition, shot by the infamous Steven Meisel, is sweet and pinky and somehow it makes me think of 50’s movies or Disney fairies. Love it!

Herve Leger - Spring Summer 2012

Herve Leger – Spring Summer 2012

The Herve Leger Spring – Summer 2012 campaign really blew our minds visually so we looked into in just to find a truly inspiring story. Fatima Siad, the model starring in the campaign is one of the few American Next Top Models who manage to actually star in A-list campaigns. Having an Ethiopian-Somali origin, her mission always was to to raise awareness against the violence she herself experienced in her childhood during the Somalian Civil War. Respect.
